The Nebraska Cattlemen’s Midyear Meeting will be held in Holdrege on June 8-9. Holdrege, the home of current NC President Pete McClymont, along with the Phelps-Gosper NC affiliate, will be hosting this year’s meeting and invite cattle producers from across the state to venture to south-central Nebraska for the event.
The Holdrege area has a strong historical background. Thousands of early settlers crossed through the area on the Oregon Trail. The Plum Creek Massacre of Aug. 7, 1874, is historically known as the initial incident of the Indian War of 1874.
Many of the first settlers of the area are of Swedish descent, lured to the area by government homesteads and cheap railroad land. The agricultural area around Holdrege is a major Nebraska economic driver, with numerous cow-calf, feedlot and farming operations. Phelps County ranks third in the state in the total value of sales of cattle and calves.
Nebraska Cattlemen members are encouraged to make plans to come to Holdrege and take part in industry discussions during the six policy committee meetings addressing animal health, brand, education, marketing, natural resources and tax matters. Many issues affect Nebraska cattle producers and your voice can be heard during policy discussions at these meetings. This is your opportunity to shape NC’s policy and provide direction for leadership and staff.
The event’s activities start with the annual Midyear golf tournament at the Holdrege Country Club. Lunch for golfers will be at 11 a.m., followed by a four-person shotgun start scramble on Holdrege’s 18-hole course. Following the golf tournament, members are invited to attend the Welcome and Steak Feed. Make arrangements to enjoy a delightful evening of food and drink and socializing with NC members from across the state at the beautiful Holdrege Country Club.
Friday, a full day’s activities will begin at the air-conditioned Holdrege Middle School, with registration at 7 a.m., along with the NC Board of Directors meeting, followed by the first round of committee meetings at 9 a.m.
The annual NC Research and Education Foundation lunch and program will be at 11:30 a.m., where winners of the Retail Value Steer Challenge and NC Youth Scholarships will be announced.
The second round of NC committee meetings begins at 1:30 p.m., followed by the General Session. The Nebraska Cattlewomen will also be holding their meetings on Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
A special Friday evening Beef & Wine social is planned, mirroring the event started at last year’s Midyear in North Platte. Proceeds benefit local charities. Please make arrangements to stay into Friday evening and attend this worthy event.
