NC Research & Education Foundation Supports UNL Programs

A highlight of the recent Nebraska Cattlemen Research and Education Foundation (NC R&EF) luncheon at the 2006 NC Convention in Lincoln was a presentation by UNL Animal Science Department Head Don Beermann.  He gave an update on the activities and status of UNL’s Animal Sciences Department and outlined the department’s programs, enrollment status and strategic plan.

While current legislative shortfalls and challenges in enrollment have forced the department to tighten their belts, support from the Nebraska Cattlemen and the NC Research & Education Foundation is vital and encouraging, according to Beermann. During the luncheon, George Cooksley, NC R&EF treasurer, presented a check for $50,000 to the UNL Foundation in support of Animal Sciences programs, scholarships and the UNL Livestock Judging Team.

The check represents the first of three pledged installments from the Foundation to UNL as a part of the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Excellence Fund. This fund was established to raise monies to support the Nebraska beef industry’s needs within the University of Nebraska. This support has allowed for hiring an Extension beef geneticist to replace Jim Gosey, upgrading the judging team coach from a part time grad assistant to a fulltime position and funding a variety of scholarships.  For information on how you can help raise the remaining $100,000 pledged, please contact Lee Weide at (402) 475-2333.  Y  The mission of the Nebraska Cattlemen Research and Education Foundation is to raise and provide funds for educational and scientific activities that benefit the beef cattle producers of Nebraska, as well as to advance the overall purpose of the Nebraska Cattlemen.

Sidebar  (sorry about the crazy font…….hopefully it doesn’t give you problems. Let me know if it does):

The Pension Protection Act of 2006

Are you in a financial position where you do not want or need to take the Required Minimum Distributions annually from your IRA? The Pension Protection Act of 2006 provides you with a solution to help avoid receiving this income and an opportunity to help you make a charitable gift to your favorite charity(s), perhaps the Nebraska Cattlemen Research and Education Foundation (NC R&EF).

This gift could be directed toward any of the many programs the NC R&EF supports, including scholarships, leadership training and research.

How it Works:

·  You must be 70½ years old to take advantage of this tax-free rollover of an IRA.

·  This tax-free rollover qualifies as the Required Minimum Distribution from an IRA.

·  Gifts from IRAs may be in any amount up to $100,000 for 2006 and 2007 only.

·  The gift must be made directly from the custodian of your IRA to the charity or charities of choice or to the Nebraska Community Foundation for the benefit of your hometown’s affiliated fund.

·  Gifts to Life Income Plans, Donor Advised Funds, Support Organizations and Private Foundations do not qualify.

We welcome the opportunity to discuss this new charitable giving opportunity with you. Please contact Jana Jensen of the Nebraska Community Foundation by phone at (308)588-6299 or at janajensen@nebcommfound.org  or Jim Gustafson of the Nebraska Community Foundation by phone at (402) 323-7341 or at jgustafson@nebcommfound.org.
