Waylon Hullinger
Waylon Hullinger was hired as a livestock program specialist with the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality in April, 2008.
His job focuses on compliance assistance for the general public, implementing regulations, permit writing for livestock operations, and complaint and discharge investigations. Hullinger’s territory is the counties of: Nance, Merrick, Hamilton, Howard, Hall, Sherman, and Buffalo.
“I like to interact with the producers in my territory,” Hullinger said. “If anyone in or out of my territory has any questions about anything dealing with the Department they can call me anytime. If I do not know the answer, I will do my best to find one.”
Hullinger grew up on a farm southeast of York.
“On our farm we raised livestock (pigs and cattle) and grew corn and soybeans with a little bit of alfalfa,” Hullinger said. “We got out of pigs in the mid 90’s when the market went south, but we always had a cow calf herd.”
He said that throughout his life, he has always been around livestock. His grandfather, Gary Hullinger, had his own business as a cattle buyer for many producers in and out of the state of Nebraska. He grandfather also had his own cattle that he kept either in the feedlot near Stromsburg, or the pasture lands in Iowa, Minnesota, or Missouri.
“I traveled quite extensively with my grandfather from sale barn to sale barn in Nebraska and surrounding states,” Hullinger said.
He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and graduated in 2003 with a degree in Natural Resources. During his time at the University, Hullinger worked for the Animal Science Department while taking summer classes. He also worked for Plant Science Department where he conducted research at Halsey National Forest. |
