Nebraska Cattlemen Convention & Trade Show Speakers Announced

The NC Convention and Trade Show will be held at the Kearney Holiday Inn in on Nov. 28 - 29. The range of topics and speakers for the event is broad and the event is open to all producers. Here is a sampling of the speakers and topics they will address.

During the Opening General Session, Jay Wolf, NC President, will outline the challenges and accomplishments of the association during the past year; Judy Reece, Nebraska CattleWomen President, will present a report on CattleWomen activities during 2007; John Owens, University of Nebraska IANR Vice President, will discuss plans for IANR and the Department of Animal Science; Tamara Thies, director of Environmental Issues for NCBA will discuss front burner issues in Washington, D.C.; Fita Witte,American National CattleWomen President elect will discuss ANCW priorities for 2008.

In the Cattlemen’s College portion of the event, Tim Loy, a nutritionist from Broken Bow, will speak about feeding Distillers by-products in the cow calf sector; Galen Erickson, ruminant nutritionist at UNL, will discuss by-product feeding in the feedlot industry; Mitch Blanding, with Pfizer Animal Health, will be speak to the cow/calf group about lameness; Roy Gehrt, part owner of the Overton Veterinary Clinic, will speak about lameness issues in the feedlot industry; Gary Sides, with Pfizer Animal Health will be speak to feedlot producers about Pfizer Animal Health issues; Jim Carr, a cow/calf producer from Burwell, will speak to the cow /calf group about rotational grazing; Anne Burkholder, NC Animal Health & Nutrition Committee chair and owner of Will Feed Inc. of Cozad, will be discuss Grace/Mayer workman’s comp program with the feedlot group. She will also discuss the future of the BQA program and the Transportation Quality Assurance Program; Todd McCartney, of the Joe Steward Group, will speak about promoting stewardship of land, livestock and those who manage them.

 

In the All Councils session, Jay Wolf will address possible membership dues changes; and Weldon Sleight, NCTA Dean, will discuss the college’s new 100 Beef Cow Ownership Advantage program.  In the Feedlot Council meeting, Jim Mintert, KSU ag economist will discuss the Cattle Basis Risk Analysis Tools at BeefBasis.com, which provides producers information and analytics they need to improve marketing decisions influenced by cattle basis risk. In the Seedstock Council meeting, Ronette Bush, Classic manager, will review the 2007 Classic and plans for the 2008; Brent Plugge, Extension Educator, will discuss Classic programming; and Pete McClymont, NC vice president of legislative affairs, will address the status of the embryo transfer issue.

In the Animal Health & Nutrition Committee, Ryan Ruppert, NCBA’s BQA director, will discuss the status of the national program and its goals for 2010. In the Brand Committee, George Cooksley, will discuss the need to raise the fees and the need for legislation to set higher limits on fees. There will be some discussion on fence law. There is also some discussion anticipated on changing the name of the committee to more accurately reflect the wide scope of its responsibilities. In Education,Sheila Scheidler, Interim Animal Science Department Chair, will discuss department priorities; and Alan Baquet, Ag Economics Department Chair and Director of the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI), will discuss department projects. In Marketing, former Sen. Curt Bromm is invited to speak about I-300 issues. In Natural Resources, John Askew, EPA Region VII administrator, will discuss what the “revised” CAFO rule means for cattle producers. In Taxation, Kristen Gottschalk, government relations director of Nebraska Rural Electric Association and Terry Warth, governmental affairs manager of Nebraska Public Power District, will discuss benefits and challenges of wind energy.

 

During the Trade Show Reception & Dinner, R.P. Smith will provide commentary and poetry that is a by-product of the beef industry, and has been processed by reciting for ruminates, relatives, and ranchers. 

At the NCW Annual Meeting, Daren Williams,executive director for Spokesperson Development from NCBA, will discuss “The Five Steps to be Heard Online.”

 

The NC Research & Education Foundation Luncheon will feature Trent Loos,radio personality and agricultural activist, shining light on anti ag and beef efforts and he will explain how producers can respond; Ann Marie Bosshammer, Nebraska Beef Council executive director, will discuss the new national beef advertising campaign and the Fully-Cooked Southwestern Short Ribs provided for the luncheon by Omaha Steaks; John Carter, senior research historian, Nebraska State Historical Society,will provide an update on as well as show a brief sample of the Beef State documentary that is being produced by Nebraska Educational Television and NSHS.

For the Annual Banquet, Sen. Tom Hansen, will serve as Master of Ceremonies, and Congressman Adrian Smith will be featured speaker.
